Tweak UI For Ubuntu

Posted Jan 31, 2008 by Jason Faulkner

Many Windows users are familiar with the Microsoft Tweak UI tool for XP which allows you to easily change many aspects of how the OS looks and operates. If you are looking for a similar tool for your Ubuntu install, then check out Ubuntu Tweak.

Ubuntu Tweak has a similar look and feel to the Microsoft counterpart and, from the website, features:

  • View of Basic System Information(Distribution, Kernel, CPU, Memory, etc.)
  • GNOME Session Control
  • Show/Hide and Change Splash screen
  • Show/Hide desktop icons or Mounted Volumes
  • Show/Hide/Rename Computer, Home, Trash icon or Network icon
  • Tweak Metacity Window Manager’s Style and Behavior
  • Compiz Fusion settings, Screen Edge Settings, Window Effects Settings, Menu Effect Settings
  • GNOME Panel Settings
  • Nautilus Settings
  • Advanced Power Management Settings
  • System Security Settings

You can read a review of Ubuntu Tweak, but I really think this is a great step forward for Windows users trying out the OS for the first time. When I was customizing my installation, I would have loved this tool as opposed to having to go through all the administrative and configuration screens.
