Upgrading A Windows Live Spaces Blog To WordPress

If you hadn’t heard, Windows Live blogs are now WordPress-powered.

Said honestly, this is awesome because the previous Spaces interface was complete junk. To give you a better idea of how awesome this is, PCMech itself is WordPress-powered. We dig it quite a bit. :)

Upgrading to WP in Spaces is easy:

Go to spaces.live.com and login with your Windows Live ID (usually your Hotmail address).

You’ll see this:

Hit the "Get started" link next to the big black W.

You’ll see this:

Click Continue.

At this point you go to a different site, wordpress.com.

You’ll see this:

Click the orange Connect button.

A window will pop up like this:

Click Connect.

You technically don’t have to do this, but if you don’t you’ll be required to authorize your blog each time. Authenticating WordPress automatically is strongly recommended to save hassle.

At this point you’ll be prompted to create a WordPress.com account:

Enter in your desired username and your password. Be sure to remember this info as it is technically a separate account outside of your Windows Live ID – even though they are connected.

Also be sure to check the box to agree to the terms of service. After that click the orange Next button.

You then see this:

Your blog domain is shown along with title.

The only part here you have to pay attention to is Privacy. By default the blog should be set to private. If you want it public, you’ll have to tick the option for public.

You may also want to pay attention to the setting below that, Publicize. Anyone currently on your Windows Live Messenger will automatically be notified whenever you post something new to your blog. If you feel that would annoy your friends, uncheck it.

Click the orange Signup when finished.

At this point your blog is all done and ready to rock. You will be presented with your blog address which you can go check out.

Some final quick tips for posting stuff to your blog:

If you use Windows, download the Windows Live Writer software to connect up your blog. It’s more or less a mini version of Word – and that’s not a bad thing. WLW is available as part of the Windows Live Essentials suite. Yes, it’s free.

You can completely skip logging into Windows Live and use WordPress.com directly if you like to go and post content to your blog. Instead of going to spaces.live.com, go to www.wordpress.com and use your WordPress username and password to login with.

Ah, pretty cool. Do you know if there is a way to merge a Windows Live Spaces Blog with an existing WordPress blog? Or do you have to make it an entirely new one?
