Use A Wireless Router As An Access Point

One thing which has always made me scratch my head is that wireless access points always seem to be more expensive than wireless routers. The range on an access point doesn’t seem to be much of difference, so why not use a wireless router as an access point?

I set this up at work and it was a breeze. Basically all you have to do is plug the router directly into your computer, open the router’s control panel (something like http://192.168.1.1) and tell the router to use DHCP to obtain it’s address.

That’s pretty much it. Of course you will want to apply the appropriate wireless security. If anything gets misconfigured, just reset the router (using the tiny reset button) and start again.

    I have issue with inteference with wireless routers, could it be my computer or the system?

    If the computer is directly connected to a ResNet does your method place the wireless router behind the computer for purposes of identifying the MAC to the net administrator??

    I currently have a Sprint Mobile Broadband Express Card Merlin EX720 by Novatel Wireless card for my personal computer which is a HP Pavilion dv2050us Entertainment Notebook PC for internet access. I like the abitlity this gives me to take my computer wherever and be able to get online. My work laptop is a Dell Latitude D630. My question is…is it possible to purchase an adaptor of some sort for the Sprint Mobile Broadband Express Card Merlin EX720 by Novatel Wireless card so that this will work in my Dell also?
