As you may know, Google Voice is now open to everyone. While the features of this service are immediately useful for some, a use you may not have thought of is the ability to have a “local” phone number anywhere.
For example, if you live in New York and want to have a local Atlanta number, you can do this using Google Voice. Just configure the service to forward the calls to your Google Voice Atlanta number to your New York number and callers will not know the difference.
This situation is useful for working remotely (your home office is in NY but your customers are in Atlanta) or if you are moving and want to preserve a local number for people calling from their home phone (in the event they do not have unlimited long distance).
