Useful Command Line Tools

The power of the command line is virtually limitless. It allows you to script common tasks, schedule commands to run autonomously and perform tasks much faster than by hand. That said I am always on the lookout (or writing my own) for useful command line tools. Today I ran across Gammadyne’s free collection of command line tools.

These free tools include:

  • Wake on LAN.
  • Size reporting tool.
  • A command line timer (good for measuring how long something takes to run).
  • Tool to delete a file on the next reboot.
  • Tool to put the computer to sleep.

Again, while none of these tools are revolutionary, the true power lies in the ability to script and/or schedule these tasks to run.

On one of my XP Pro based computers I somehow lost the minimized icons on the task bar. When I minimize an operating program, it disappears. The only way to get to it is the “Switch to” prompt in the Task Manager. I have tried repeatedly to recover it but can’t find a way to do so successfully. Any suggestions?
