Video Comments on PCMech

We have had the ability to post video comments here on PCMech and over at DavidRisley.com for a couple weeks now. I never officially announced it, however, which may be why nobody has bothered to use it.

So, our video comments will be using Seesmic. Seesmic is really onto something when it comes to allowing video comments on blogs.

To use it, all you need is a webcam with the Flash plug-in installed on your browser. When you go to post a comment, you will need to tell Flash it is OK to access your webcam. From there, just hit the Enter button to record and the Enter button to stop recording. You will have the ability to preview your comment before you save it, so you can have do-overs.

I hope you enjoy and use this new feature. We’ll see how well it works out here.

What is the file format for the videos? They don’t open for me, using Kubuntu, with Firefox, and flash plugin and mplayer, and all the codecs I can find.

They’re just Flash. If you have the most recent Flash plug-in, it should work. As far as I know, these vids shouldn’t be any different than a Youtube video.

I can play YouTube videos fine. But when I click on your video above this comment section it hangs up with “Transferring data from http://www.google-analytics.com...” showing in the progress bar. This FF3.0b5 with flashplugin 9.0 r124

No, everything is enabled. I turned off “Block-Popups” but it didn’t help. I sure wish they would get the Firebug extension working for FF3.

David, I just tried it on my 32 bit laptop with exactly the same software, and it works fine. so it must be a problem with the 64 bit setup.
