As a heavy user of virtual machines and with Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 being my tool of choice, I work with VHD files quite a bit. As a result, often times I need to access a file I have stored on a virtual machine which means I have to boot up the VM to access the file. Thanks to 7-Zip, there is now a much easier way.
The “beta” release of 7-Zip (at this time, version 9.15) offers the ability to open VHD files and extract files as though they were a normal zip archive. I do not believe (nor would I recommend) 7-Zip can write file back to a VHD file, but the simple ability to be able to access files without having to boot up a VM is awesome.
I know there are other utilities out there which do this function already but since I already use 7-Zip extensively, this functionality avoids the need for ‘yet another utility’.
