A while ago I wrote about VirusTotal which is an online on-demand scanner which checks files against lots of different scanning engines. This free service offers several ways to scan a file on-demand:
- Upload via a webpage
- Email as an attachment
- Use their Send To tool
I am not exactly sure when the Send To tool was made available, but this definitely makes the service much more accessible. One interesting note on their statistics page is the “Failures in Detection” which shows that almost every detected infected file was caught by some but not all scanners.
VirusTotal is not a replacement for running AV programs locally, but if you suspect something is not right with a file you can do a pretty thorough check.
