VLC Can Rip DVD’s To Your Computer

Recently we decided to take some of our seldom watched DVD’s and put them into storage (i.e. in a box in the closet). So before doing this, I looked into ripping these to my computer so we could potentially watch them without having to dig them out the closet. While searching the internet for easy options to accomplish this, I came across this article which explains how VLC can be used to rip DVD’s.

Since I already have VLC on my machine for DVD playback it made total sense to just use it for ripping. The process is very easy to do as it is basically just a menu option. I never really noticed this because I typically would just start the playback an not pay attention to much else.

Many of you may already be aware of this functionality, but for those of you who are not it is a useful feature to know about.

  1. I use VLC and my TV card to convert my old VHS tapes. Those are then recorded to a DVD.

  2. How many of your readers do not know what “VLC” is?????? I do not look a gift horse in the mouth but…………..VLC should have been defined in the first sentence of the artical for us ignoramusses!!!

    About VLC

VLC media player is a highly portable multimedia player supporting most audio and video formats (H.264, Ogg, DivX, MKV, TS, MPEG-2, mp3, MPEG-4, aac, …) from files, physical media (DVDs, VCD, Audio-CD), TV capture cards and many network streaming protocols.

It can also convert media files, transcode and act as a streaming server over unicast or multicast and IPv4 or IPv6. It doesn’t need any external codec, program or codec pack to work.

  4. I never heard about that VLC is good for ripping videos and movies. I have VLC on my PC and I only used it on watching films and videos. VLC is just like a tool which can play any type of video formats. If VLC has a rip feature can you teach us how to do it?

  5. Really? I have been using VLC for a bit long time but never knew till reading this article that VLC has this feature.. I will definitely try it and see if it works for me.. Thanks!
