I have written a couple of posts in the past about ways you can reduce vampire power drain around your house to save some energy and money, so to add to this collection check out the Outlet Regulator. The premise is simple: when the plugged in device is fully charged, the Outlet Regulator physically ejects the plug from the wall to stop power draw. There is a video on this link above so you can see it in action.
Unfortunately, these are not yet in production but I am posting this to show there are cool innovations being made on the energy conservation front (more so than the tradition solar panel, etc. devices). Does unplugging a cell phone make a difference? Yes. While small, if everyone did this the impact could be huge.
For the time being, you can get smart power strips which feature automatic shutoff. I still prefer the power switch which has individual outlet control, but whatever works… go with it.

Hmm. Don’t like it for something like a cell phone. I want it to be near maximum charge when I pick it up in the morning to leave the house. It would be nice for something like my kids’ Powerwheels or camera batteries.
Why not just flip a relay? Also, the timer int he device still uses power so I fail to see how it would make an difference. Also, a cell phone starts to discharge as soon as it is off the charger. I want mine fully charged when I pick it up.
