First of all, this is not intended to create panic in any way, it is merely a warning of what is currently happening in Apple’s App Store. Some apps which are are/were available in Apple’s App Store have been identified as culprits in a fraudulent billing scheme.
Apple has acknowledged the problem and removed the suspect apps that they are aware of (“aware of” being a key phrase).
[I]t’s incredibly important for consumers to remain informed about the facts of the issue. Accounts were compromised. Users were charged fraudulently, and enough users were scammed (just read the comments) to the point where these rogue developers overran the App Store’s leaderboards in more than one category.
While this is certainly the exception and not the rule, I am posting this as a notice for readers who have made purchases from the App Store to keep an eye on their credit card statements for any suspicious activity.
This just goes to show that even an approval process (such as Apple has for the App Store or Mozilla has for their add-on’s) is not bulletproof protection for users. Hopefully none of our readers are impacted by this scam, but if you have downloaded any apps from developers listed in the first article linked above keep an eye out for fraudulent charges.
