Watch YouTube Videos Offline With The YouTube Downloader

While this might be old news to some, I’m sure there are still a few people who wouldn’t mind hearing about this tool.

Let’s say you’re on YouTube, and you see a video you really like. It’s downright awesome, and you think “Hey, I’d love to put that on my iPod.” Believe it or not, you actually can do that. Some time ago, I stumbled across a very, very useful tool known as the YouTube Downloader. It’s pretty much what’s written on the box. It lets you download YouTube videos and even convert them to mp3 format. Rather awesome, no?

Of course, it goes without saying that the potential for copyright infringement while using this tool is pretty damned high. To that end, I caution anyone who happens to download it: make sure whatever video you’re downloading isn’t copyrighted and that regardless of which video you’re ripping from YouTube, it’s for personal use only.  Chances are, if a video uses a song from a well-known artist or group, that material’s copyrighted. If it’s an original, unique work, you’re probably in the clear.

You can download the YouTube downloader here. Don’t bother purchasing it. The free version works just fine.

Happy listening!

  1. An original, unique work is still owned/copyrighted of the author, unless that copyright is otherwise waived.  It’s just much less likely that the small creators would press the issue…they’d rather their material be circulated.

There are reasons that youtube doesn’t have built in downloading.

There’s actually a better solution that requires no downloads. Go to any youtube video and then in the address bar replace http://www.youtube.com with http://www.kickyoutube.com.

As for downloads there’s a Firefox plugin called UnPlug that find any resolution and quality of the video that youtube provides for a particular video, you can choose which one exactly you can. Most of the time you’d probably want the highest quality one.
