Ways You Can Contribute To Open Source Projects

Posted Nov 25, 2008 by Jason Faulkner

If you use free software, odds are you are using at least open source program. If you aboslutely love a particular open source program you might want to consider contributing to it. By no means do you have to be a programmer to contribute, here are a few ideas of ways you can help the project without so much as downloading the source code:

  • Spread the word by either word of mouth, forum postings, blog posts, etc. The more people using the software, the better.
  • Write some documentation. If you don’t want to write technical documentation, consider making forum or blog posts on how to do certain tasks.
  • Donate some money. Nothing says thank you as well as cash.

Again, these are just a few ways. If nothing else, spreading the word is a simple and effective way to get more people aware of and using the program.

I agree. I have been helped tremendously by ‘how to’ posts on blogs. There’s even some open source stuff that I couldn’t really get going with until I read some of those how to’s. If it weren’t for those contributions to the project, I might have strayed away.
