Gmail has an inbuilt security measure in the system where if you appear to be sending too many emails in a specific span of time, you’re purposely blocked from sending any more email for a few hours and will receive the notice you’ve “reached a limit” for sending email.
But what if you don’t send a lot of email and receive this message? What then?
Unfortunately, it’s probably the case that your account has been compromised and a spammer is sending out mass-emails using your account credentials.
The solution? Immediately change your email password, change your challenge questions and enable two-step verification.
Does this apply for other email systems where a similar notice occurs?
Yes. The “you’re sending too much mail” only happens if you’re sending out too much mail or if your account was compromised and someone (or a bot) is sending out too much mail per your account.
How long will it take before you can start sending mail again?
It varies from system to system, but usually not more than 24 hours.
