What Free/Open Source Programs Would You Pay For?

For many of you, a lot (if not all) programs/utilities on your computer are probably free or open source software. So I ask, which of these programs would you pay for if they had the same features but where only commercially available?

List the software title and the highest price you would pay for it. Here are my lists of programs I use on a regular basis:

Would definitely buy–

  • GnuCash – $50 – This is about the going rate for personal finance software (although it is an awesome business bookkeeping program).
  • 7-Zip – $20 – I utilize this so much (and for a variety of tasks), I can’t do without it.
  • Firefox – $10 – I would have a hard time paying much for this since IE is readily available.
  • Process Explorer – $10 – Very useful utility to have.

Would pass on–

  • Paint.NET – I really like it, but I seldom use if for stuff I couldn’t do with Paint.
  • Sumatra PDF – Plenty of alternatives available.
  • Notepad++ – Again, a great program but there are lots others out there like it.
  • Keepass – Nice to have, but I could do without it.

Actually thinking about this gives you a good appreciation of what you can get for nothing. So what’s on your list?

Ubuntu — $100 (or whatever I’d have to pay for ms windows, no matter what I spent on this upfront, I’d make it back in antiv-virus/headache savings)
    Inkscape — $50
KOHA Integrated Library Software — $3000+/- (This powers all of our library circulation/catalog/etc functions)
Ccleaner — $10 (don’t know about alternatives, but I love this little thing)

I´d go along with Ubuntu, but perhaps half the amount would be closer to my taste (I am writing this using it). Inkscape I yet have to have a look at, but the GIMP would be worth 50 bucks in my book, too. CC is good and on Windows, certainly worth the tenner. The one thing I did pay for to run on Vista is Winpatrol Plus. Whatever the amount was…

If I have to pay for it, it’s not Open Source.

I don’t use that many OS tools, but I’d have to second the 7zip. Also, WinMerge is great for programmers. I might kick in $20 for that one.

BTW, what are you trying to do, give people ideas??? :)

If i wasn’t money tied, I would try and fund Zenwalk Linux £50.00
