When WinPatrol offered their software for $0.99 last week, I believe the author was playing to impulse buyers. This would explain why ring tones, iPhone apps and individual song downloads offered for $1 are so successful, because people will spend a dollar without thinking.
So what is your “impulse buy” price point for software?
Personally, I think anything under $5 would be mine. If it sounds like something I might need or use, the benefit is worth the risk of if I don’t like it. I’m curious, what our readers think so please share you thoughts in the comments.

Here is my price on popular softwares:
- Microsoft Windows XP : 8 $
- Microsoft Windows Vista : 2 $
- Microsoft Windows 7 : 12.99 $
- Adobe Photoshop : 4.49 $
- Linux : -5 $ ( they must pay me to use it ! )
- other USEFUL softwares (like antiviruse and so on) : around 0.10 $ and 0.20 $
thats mine!
I think the use level of the software is important to look at.
Low level: one specific use, many alternate software options available.
Mid Level: Used for multiple projects, some alternate software options available.
High Level: Used for multiple projects, not many alternate software options available.
Low : $2.00
Mid : $10.00
High : $20.00
That’s my $0.02!
I am always bargain hunting some of my best finds have been ms life cam 6000 for $8.00 cdn reg around 80.00 a an iogear usb hub and card reader for $3.50 regular around 60-70 dollars I would say my price point would be around $15
My price range is 0- 10 dollars . If i could really use a software or web service and it works nice after a quick try, I don’t even think a lot if the price is below this range. I immediately buy it.
For more expensive software I have to think out a bit.
