In every town in America there is usually at least one diner that has a photo or painting on the wall of some local street showing what the town square used to look like in the past. Well, it took a while, but the internet finally has a version of this called What Was There. Simply put, it’s (currently) specific areas of towns and cities in the United States that show photos of how they used to look in the past, the same way the photo does in the local diner. The difference is obviously that it covers more than one specific place.
The best part about What Was There is that anybody can participate. If you have old photos of buildings, streets, old businesses that have come and gone and so on, you can submit them to the site right now.
This site is very new and is in what they call "pre-beta" stage, but it is ready to use. Given the fact the site is looking to expand, if you have old photos of your local area, you may literally be the first person to submit photos for your town. This gives you some friendly bragging rights, if you will.
