Some PC games are best played with game controllers rather than the keyboard and mouse. For example, racing games are much better experienced with the game controller over the keyboard – no question there. Another instance are games that were designed for game consoles first, then PCs second.

The best OS for gaming on the PC is Windows – and that’s not an opinion, that’s fact. You want to play games on a PC, you run Windows. Even the most diehard Linux or Mac fan will even admit that’s true.

Concerning the best gaming controller, like Windows it’s also made by Microsoft – the Xbox 360 "Common Controller".

Ergonomically speaking, the Xbox controller is the best of the lot. A PlayStation controller comes in at a close second, but generally speaking the Xbox controller just feels better and can be used longer without your fingers getting twisted up in knots.

Microsot’s Xbox Common Controller comes in two flavors: Wired or Wireless. If you go with wired, as in model 52A-00004, that’s 37 bucks. If you go wireless, as in model JR9-00011, that’s 55 bucks.

The best part is that it’s unlikely you’d even need to install the driver software for either on Windows. Just plug in and Windows should auto-install any drivers it needs without the need for the provided disc.

"How would I know if I like how the controller feels or not?"

That’s easy enough – test it. Any major department store will usually have a working Xbox on display for people to play games on; it will obviously have Xbox controllers attached. You can try one out there to see if you like it or not.
