(I was genuinely multitasking during the DOS era on my Amiga). X11 window manager is all you need on *nix, to do it much better, and it's in every implementation. You do not need to run any other desktop environment on top if you want to do it like that.

Why would you need some kludge like DESQview on Unix, when it was designed to be multitasking (and multi-user) in the first place, unlike MS-DOS, and way before Windows? They take fractions of seconds and I really doubt the tax anything but the weakest graphics cards. I think the thin and light movement is overrated. The only apps people typically use that push hardware at all are games and video processing (coversion, etc.). Storage is down to less than $0.10 per GB and for some reason people still give a hoot about how big an OS is on the hard drive. Waste of effort and time. Give me cool looking and easy to use.

Wow. I think this is kind of splitting hairs. I hardly even notice the animations. Then when you add in the desktop effects, things can get pretty slow IN COMPARISON to something like Xfce or fluxbox. You may not be sitting there yawning as you wait for your machine to perform a task. But, if you use a really lightweight gui, you will notice the difference.

I’ve noticed a difference between a dead stock Gnome desktop and fluxbox on a modern machine. It's when you're switching between open tasks that the slowdowns happen. For example, in Windows if you ALT-TAB to a program currently minimized in the taskbar, there is an animation when it is brought to the foreground. There's another if you minimize a window. With something even as simple as those animations turned off, task switching speed increases quite considerably.

With single tasks such as a web browser, no you won’t notice the difference. Maybe a second or two at most? I don't seem to notice any lag on my computer and I have all that stuff turned on. When I click to go to a new page its pretty much instantaneous other than the download time which is going to happen regardless of how much eye candy is turned on.

Is the difference between a plain Jane GUI and a GUI will all the eye candy turned on really that different in speed if you have a newer computer?
