Where To Buy Digital Cameras

Generally speaking, digital cameras can be bought in any one of the following places:

  • Internet (BHphoto.com, eBay, etc.)
  • Electronics Store (Best Buy, Circuit City, etc.)
  • Department Store (Your local mall, Wal-Mart, K-Mart, etc.)
  • Camera Store (various)

Which is the Best?

Camera store. In Florida USA one of the more popular stores is called Ritz Camera (seen in malls or as free-standing stores). This is a bona fide true-blue camera shop. They sell everything from consumer to prosumer to full-on professional models. The staff is trained to answer questions about camera stuff and ready to assist.

Bear in mind there are many different camera stores. Your best bet to find one is via the phone book. There’s probably one near you.

Which is the lowest cost?

Internet. However, bear in mind it is highly recommended you do not buy from the internet solely based on the reason that if you have to return a defective unit, it will be a hassle.

Which is the highest cost?

Camera store. But they also typically have the best service.

Which has the easiest return policy if I don’t like the one I buy?

Department store. Most have a no-questions-asked policy for returns. They will ordinarily take back whatever you return as long as you have all the original packing materials and your receipt (obviously).

In addition, department store return policies are usually 30 days while electronics stores are only 14 (or less).

Always ask about the return policy before buying a digital camera.

Which has the most choice?

Electronics store. Lots of cameras to choose from; wide selection.

And yes it is very important to physically hold a camera in your hand before buying it. Your comfort level while taking photos is very important (because the last thing you want to do is “fight” with your own camera while taking shots.)
