Who Is The Real Threat To Your Privacy?

Once again, Google is making news again because effective 1 March 2012 they’re migrate/merge/whatever Google products to center personal data around Google+ accounts primarily.

It is really easy to read that and think, "not good". My personal opinion? What Google does with your data is nothing compared to the real threats to your privacy.

The two biggest threats to your privacy are as follows:

1. You

Who signs up for accounts on the internet? You do. Who shares out things like photos and status updates? You do. Who enters in things like your birth date, SSN and other data on sites that ask for it? You do. It’s all you. Your fault.

"Gee, that makes me feel bad."

Don’t worry, because everyone including you has received a crash course in online internet privacy over the past year, and you are very well aware of what not to post on the internet these days.

In other words, don’t feel bad but rather pat yourself on the back, because you know a whole lot more about online privacy now compared to a year ago.

2. Your dopey friends and relatives

"My friends and relatives aren’t stupid."

When it comes to online privacy, yes they are.

Your friends and relatives are probably the biggest threat to your personal privacy more than anything else.

Ever have the "Oh, I gave your phone number to [person you don't know], you don’t mind, right?" happen? We all have.

Ever have someone send you a free online greeting card? That leads to spam because that online greeting card site now has your email address.

Ever have someone sent you invites to games on Facebook? Now that company who makes the game knows who you are and will most likely pitch sales junk at you.

Ever have someone forward you a "funny joke" (which always isn’t) in email, and you’re on the CC list so every single person on that list knows your email at that point?

It’s not the big web companies you should be concerned with concerning your privacy, it’s you and your dopey friends and relatives you should be worried about.

  4. Dumb article.
Stupidity or carelessness is no more the same as deliberately violating people’s privacy, as taking out a wad of cash and showing people how much you’ve got is the same as robbing someone.
