I don’t know. I’ve tried many different Linux distros on many different machines and I’ve always found it to be horribly unreliable. Doesn’t take much to screw it up. Install a program or change a system setting and you’re into another re-install unless you’ve backed it up to another partition. I’ve never had much luck getting to last more than a few weeks before failing.

I like the idea of using Linux, and I installed Debian 4 on my desktop PC on it’s own hard drive. I also installed a dual boot. When I wish to boot up into Linux, I just let it happen, but if I wish to go to XP, I have to sit there and catch the screen to pick Windows XP. So, getting into Linux is easy and more difficult for XP.
I still haven’t learned how to install a program in Linux, and I haven’t learned how to mount a drive, so that I can access my files on my C & D drives.
I have much more time now that I only work 2 days a week. (last year worked 6 days a week.) But, I think that my learning ability is somewhat diminished as I am 61 now.
I don’t remember terminal program syntax. It reminds me of DOS back in the mid 80′s. It seems like a lot of work to run Linux for me, but I think it’s ideal for new users who are young and able to learn quickly.
The free part doesn’t mean much to me as I have adequate funds. (for now)

I switched to Linux long ago, and haven’t looked back. There are distros that are easy even for Windows users to get used to, and even self-install, which gives them time to learn the inner workings of the system at their own pace. And, once you start using Linux, you will want to learn to use the full power and flexibility available to you that Linux allows.

Nice write-up Rich. The beauty of Linux is in it’s total adaptability and its stability. The problem is that you have to delve into your inner geek to really appreciate it. I don’t mind it, but some do.

You could just say it’s basically Unix. Although many who read or just visit this site are somewhat savvy, many that I know appreciate the “I’ll do it for you” type of computing, and at times I do too. I really hope some flavor of Linux becomes as easy to use as Windows and in turn, more mainstream software companies write programs/games for. Linux is great for some, Windows/MacOS is ok for all.
