Retro Friday: Windows 2000 Revisited

The first time I did a video on this OS, I said some somewhat-not-nice things about it because it’s old. This time around I concentrated on the positives of Win2k.

To note: Pretty much the only reason Win2k is still usable – outside of an office environment that is – is because of Firefox 5, Adobe Flash 10 and Thunderbird 5. Firefox is the only modern Win2k browser (nope, no Opera), Thunderbird the only modern Win2k mail program, and Flash is there for modern web video in the Win2k environment. Without those three things, Win2000 wouldn’t last too long as a retro-usable OS.

Yes, there is a difference between retro-unusable and retro-usable. Unusable means that while cool, the whatever-old-thing-it-is is essentially a museum piece. Usable means that while old it’s still usable with modern tools, and Win2000 definitely qualifies – for now – as retro-usable.

If I had an old pc without OS disks, whats the best way to get a windows 2000 install cd?

I would look to ebay for that. I did a quick peek in there and you can find that OS in the retail box for around 60-90 bucks U.S. If you knew someone who had it you could burn a copy of it like you could do with Win98 I believe.
