Windows XP Built In File Compression

Posted Dec 30, 2005 by David Risley

If you’re having the problem of low disk space but you don’t want to delete any more of your files, there may be a simple alternative for you. Now of course there is WinZip, among other file compression utilities, but with Windows’ file compression, you don’t need to take forever to decompress the files you want to open. It may cause a slight slowdown in your pc but usually it is not noticeable. If you want to use this file compression, do as follows:

1.) Right click on the file or folder you want to compress and select “Properties”.
2.) When the new window pops up, select the “Advanced Button”
3.) To activate the compression, select the “Compress Contents to Save Disk Space” option.
4.) Click “Ok” and then “Apply” and the compression will begin.

Now you’re all set and ready to go compress as many files as you’d like!

Monte is a 20-year veteran of the U.S. Air Force. Afterwards, he served a long career as a computer repair tech and network administrator. LEARN MORE
