Wireless Printing With A Hub Instead Of Wireless Print Server

The biggest drawback to buying a wireless print server is price. At present, for a set-it-and-forget-it type of wireless print server that has reliable connectivity, you’re going to spend at least $70. That’s a deal-breaker for many because to spend 70 bucks on top of what you spent for your printer and ink/toner simply isn’t justified. Yes, it’s true there are lower-cost wi-fi print servers available, or you could even get a cheap router with a print server built-in, but what’s really needed is a wi-fi USB hub to get the most for your money.

Fortunately, it exists, and it’s called the IOGEAR GUWIP204.

What makes the IOGEAR wireless USB hub better than a print server is two things. First, it’s under $70 and second, you can plug not one but four USB devices into it – all wirelessly.

"Won’t that cause network sharing violation problems?"

No. IOGEAR was smart about it and developed the device as a true sharing station, meaning multiple users (as in multiple computers) can connect without issue. You can plug in Multi-Function Printers (known as MFPs), flash drives, USB speakers (Send audio over wireless? YES!), scanners, cameras and more.

"How do I know if my printer will work with it?"

On the Windows and Mac platforms, the OS should not know the difference between a printer connected directly or through the wi-fi USB hub. If your printer is connected via USB, it should work. Important note: I cannot guarantee this, so keep your receipt in case you have to return it.

"Will it work with Linux?"

Unknown. The system requirements state it will work with Windows XP/Vista/7 and Mac OS X 10.6 and greater – but makes no mention of Linux.
