Would You Buy a Core i7-Powered 11-Inch Laptop?

Recently the guys and gals at Alienware introduced one amazing little brute of a laptop, the M11x. It’s probably safe to say that the little 11-incher would probably destroy whatever PC you’re using right now, power-wise.

The M11x comes in Core 2 Duo, Core i5 and Core i7 flavors. In i7 trim the price comes in at just under $1,100.

You’re probably wondering which i7 we’re talking about here. The exact model is: Intel® Core™ i7 640UM (4M Cache, 1.2 GHZ with 2.266 GHz Max Turbo Frequency) – Overclockable.

Overclockable?

Yes, you can overclock this thing.

As for how much RAM you can order with it, the maximum is 8GB of DDR3 @ 800MHz.

It’s also very trick that the lighting can be customized any way you want, any time you want. Don’t like the red? Go blue. Or green. Or amber. Or whatever other color you want via the "Alienware Command Center".

With all this nerd porn style bad-assery however, you have to remember something:

This is an 11-inch laptop. When I called this thing a little brute, the emphasis was on little, because it is small.

Would you like a laptop this powerful? Sure. We all would.

But can you deal with it being in an 11-inch 1366×768 resolution screen form factor?

My current laptop is a Dell mini 10v netbook, which is so underpowered compared to the Alienware M11x it’s not even funny. Even so, I really like it. But then again my netbook only cost 300 bucks.

The price point of the M11x is appropriate considering what it has under the hood.

If you had $1,100 to spend on a laptop, would you consider the M11x, or go for something physically larger and less powerful?

I own a HP dv6 with a p8700 chip and a 15.6 inch screen. It has upgraded graphics and when I open the lid this baby is instantly ready! It on par with quad core 6600 desktop unit. I love it! Yes the battery only lasts about an hour and a half but I can live with that.

I have been really thinking about getting this as my new laptop. I travel a lot and hate having to skimp on power just to own a laptop that won't weight my backpack down. As for the screen size, I was just planning on docking it to a 19″ LCD, ext DVD drive, and keyboard and mouse while I work at my desk anyway.
