I’ll be totally honest: I found this by accident.
On the root of the distro for Ubuntu 7.10 is . . .
. . . a Wubi installer. Click image above for larger view.
For those who aren’t aware, installing Ubuntu via Wubi means you can install the OS via Windows, then reboot the computer and select “Ubuntu” on startup. If you feel like uninstalling Ubuntu afterwards, you can do so via Add/Remove in Windows XP. Wubi makes this possible.
To note: I have seen in more than one instance that Wubi tends to not “like” laptop computers for whatever reason. On my Dell Inspiron 6000 and Dave’s HP laptop we’ve both encountered weirdness on attempt to do a Wubi Ubuntu install. However, on a desktop there doesn’t seem to be any issues at all. Why the weirdness occurs with Wubi on laptops is anyone’s guess.
Anyway, the reason finding the Wubi installer on the distro disc was cool is because the current Wubi from their web site only goes up to Ubuntu 7.04. From the Ubuntu disc you can do a 7.10 Wubi install.
This is good info for those who like Wubi and wanted the latest/greatest Ubuntu distro.

Unfortunately this version only seems to support CD boot as a way of bypassing BIOS problems. It does not allow the creation of a loopback hard drive image.
Please please please correct me if i’m wrong as I was one of those waiting for a fully supported WUBI
I tried it but it did not seem to install anything apart from another entry in the Vista boot loader
Same as Willem; but 7.04 easily installed on a partitioned hard drive.
I tried to install the 7.10 via the Wubi from the Distro…to no avail…will there be a Wubi in the makings that will allow me to install 7.10 via the Distribution disc, so I can still use my Windows XP?
I had no problems installing Wubi and 7.04 on my Dell XPS M1210… worked like a charm. The only thing is that I was stingy… I only allocated 4 G for the install. When it ran so well, I got excited and started loading tons of apps (that I would never use anyway, but sounded neat). I ran out of room and attempts at re-sizing the file containers proved futile. I tried the new 7.10 w/ the Wubi loader, with much more room. I wanted to see those Compiz effects! While it looks like it loaded, and it “tries” to run, it gets so far and I get into a Linux dosbox-type environment.
Wubi is an excellent “‘tween” for those not wanting a true dual boot, but wanting a good flavor of Ubuntu.
Time for me to kill the old containers and re-load the Wubi w/ 7.04.
