The X500 is a cool case. Its aimed more at the folks into the cool-factor than those who will be inside their PC a lot. For constant upgraders, this case lacks many of the real convenient feartures that make cases so easy to work with, including removable drive rails, removable motherboard mounting plate and finger access holes for the drive bay covers. Additionally, the slot inserts that you have to rip out with a screwdriver are a pain. So, as a case goes, its run-of-the-mill and gets the job done. The more than ample cooling that comes with the case is a real plus point, especially for those who will be running faster or overclocked systems and need that extra cooling.
On the cool side of things though, its quite nice. The LCD is a nice touch, and makes the PC look pretty cool when powered up, especially in the dark. The LCD remains backlit even when the power is off, which could be a bit annoying if the system were in your bedroom and you’re trying to sleep. The electric drive bay door is likewise a cool little gimmick and is sure to get some attention. I can’t help but wonder what would happen if the motor failed; there is no alternative way to open the door other than forcing it with some muscle.
The lightness of the case itself is a plus-point once you get over the initial shock. All of my cases are reasonably heavy, and my primary testbed case is heavy as hell, so lifting the X500 out of the box was like lifting air comparably. While some of the panels seem a bit flimsy, I can see that a case this light would be nice for many reasons. Also, with the aluminum being anodized, its easy to keep the case clear of dust and fingerprint.
So, here’s the rundown:
Pros:
- Lightweight
- Ample interior cooling
- Front-mounted I/O very convenient
- Backlit LCD and electric drive bay door nice features
Cons:
- A little cramped in the interior when loaded
- Missing convenient features which would make it good for parts swapping and easy upgrades
- Have to do some metal ripping to clear card slots and some drive bays
I’ll give the case 3 out of 5 stars for usability, and 4 out of 5 for the good old “coolness” factor.
