Yahoo Launched LIVE Service and It Sucks

Posted Feb 8, 2008 by David Risley

Yahoo just flipped the switch on it’s new Yahoo Live service. I’m not exactly sure why the company wanted to get into this arena, especially considering how much it sucks compared to the likes of Ustream.

For those not familiar, this is a service (free one, though), which allows you to broadcast live over the Internet using your webcam. It uses the Flash plug-in (which almost everybody has) to connect to your webcam and grab your feed. Then, anybody can watch what you’re doing and converse with you in chat.

It is kinda cool, and look for us to implement something like this here on PCMech.

That said, Yahoo Live blows. I tried it last night:

  • It is slow as hell
  • It locked up and simply would NOT broadcast my feed.
  • At one point, the image stuck although it was still getting audio.
  • It doesn’t record live sessions.
  • It’s ugly.

Perhaps it will get better with time, but in the meantime, interested parties can check out:

Here’s their bragging reel:

The service is still very much in its infancy and has been down at times. Since the website is already telling that there are 2134+ people watching 89+ live channels, its understood that there is quite a bit of load on it very quickly.

This is the "kitchen sink" e-book for computer maintenance and repair. A jam-packed 346 pages. As Monte Russel (the author) says in his e-book, "Computers have always been complex, but if a guy that grew up out in the boonies in Wyoming can fix 'em, you can also!" Monte is a 20-year veteran of the U.S. Air Force. Afterwards, he served a long career as a computer repair tech and network administrator. LEARN MORE
