Yet Another Example Of Where Linux Does Things Better

I just upgraded to Firefox 6 recently. Why haven’t I written an article about it? There’s not really much more mentioning. Fx looks the same, acts the same and there’s nothing I could really point out that would say, "Hey, look at X feature.. totally new/awesome/blah-blah".

The only thing that is making news concerning this browser is the elimination of version numbers. Is this stupid? Yes.

The only people who are doing version numbers right these days are those who release certain Linux distributions, and they way they go about it is stupidly easy to understand:

Release Version: [Month] [Year]

That’s it.

For certain distros, the release version is the month/year of release. For example, if there were a PCMech Linux and it were released this month, it would be either version August 2011 or version 2011-08. And if there were an emergency bugfix release during the same month, it would be August 2011 A or 2011-08a.

If there’s a certain piece of software such as a browser that releases rapidly, dropping the version number isn’t the solution. Changing it to month/year is a much better idea. It’s simple enough so that both developers and users like ourselves can follow along with it easily.

Or would you rather prefer just never seeing the version number at all?
