Yet Another Free Accounting Package

Posted Jan 16, 2009 | by Jason Faulkner

Over the past several months, I’ve written about a bunch of different accounting/book keeping applications which are freely available: GnuCash, Microsoft Office Accounting Express, QuickBook Starter Edition and various Excel spreadsheet templates. So today’s tip will add another one to the list, the open source application PostBooks.

When you look at the feature list, PostBooks pretty much has everything a small business would really need as it does sales, purchasing and inventory on top of the general ledger functionality. If you take a look at the screenshots, you can see this package offers a bit more level of detail than its open source counter part GnuCash (which to be fair, GnuCash is strictly book keeping). The downside is there is a bit of effort involved in the initial installation as you have to first set up a local database before using the product. Of course, you only have to do this one time, so it shouldn’t be too big of a deal to our readers.

Like the applications listed above, PostBooks is probably not for everyone but if none of the other applications do the trick for you, it is worth a look.

Which Of These Traits Applies To YOUR Computing Life?...

Also check out Ledger-SMB, another great free accounting package… also geared more towards slightly bigger businesses.
