CAPTCHA, a challenge response system in order to deter spam, is one of those things everybody hates. Nobody in the history of the internet has ever said "This is a great idea!" because both users and site administrators can’t stand it. Users find it annoying, and admins feel bad about subjecting their users to it.
There are "degrees", if you will, of CAPTCHA. Some systems aren’t too bad where you can read the skewed text fairly easily. But then there are others where it’s literally impossible to figure out what the text actually is.
The place where CAPTCHA fails more than anywhere else is on smartphones. If you use any sort of predictive text such as Swype, you’re hating life when you run into CAPTCHA. It’s obvious at that point that CAPTCHA was never intended for smartphone use.
Question for you: Do you believe CAPTCHA is nothing but a colossal failure on smartphones? If yes, does it make you purposely stay away from web interfaces on a smartphone in favor of apps because of how difficult they are to get through at times?
