STEP 1 : Materials Required

Attention PC Builders!

This tutorial will walk through the entire procedure of building your own PC. For our premium members, we also have a full video series where you can watch us build a PC step-by-step. [More information on membership]

This tutorial is intended to assist you in building a basic PC. There are obviously a plethora of possible PC configurations and hardware that you could put into your new PC if you choose. But, what we are trying to do here is help you put together a basic PC. For this reason, we are only requiring the basic components and tools to get you up and running.

Tools Required

  • Screwdriver – A Phillips-head (cross-point) screwdriver is what is used in most PCs.
  • Screw Extractor – If you have surgeon’s fingers you may not need this. But, if you’re human, it is likely you might drop a screw into your PC during this procedure and be too big-thumbed to get it out. A screw extractor can help you grab those screws and get them out without messing with the hardware. You definitely do not want to run your PC with loose screws in there. It could cause a short circuit.
  • Flashlight – Unless you are in a fantastic lighting situation, you will likely need a flashlight to get a look of the landscape in your PC while you’re working.
  • Tweezers – May be helpful for you in switching jumpers later in the tutorial.

Hardware Required

  • PC Case
  • Floppy Disk Drive
  • Hard Drive
  • CD-ROM Drive
  • Processor
  • Processor Cooling Fan
  • Motherboard
  • Memory Modules
  • Power Supply
  • Video Card
  • Keyboard & Mouse

To build a basic PC, you will need at least a motherboard, a memory module, a processor with cooling fan, a power supply, a hard drive, a floppy drive, a video card and a CD-ROM.

Most electrically sensitive hardware comes in a static bag which is designed to protect the electronics from static electricity shock. Leave your hardware in these bags until you are ready to install them.

Software Required

  • System Disk
  • Device Drivers (these usually come with the hardware above)
  • Operating System (for the purposes of this tutorial, we will assume you are choosing Microsoft Windows as your operating system – PC Mechanic has lots of great information on Linux and other alternatives)

Cables and Miscellaneous

  • Drive cables
  • Motherboard spacers (usually come with the motherboard, but are used to space the motherboard up off the mounting plate)
  • Screws (usually a whole pile of screws will come with your PC’s case, but if you are using a case you happened to have around, you will need to collect some screws)
  • Power cords (for both your PC and your monitor. They usually come with the hardware when you buy it, of course)
  • CPU Cooling Compound

      dont waste a gtx 260 on a athlonx2, spend the extra 150$ to get a phenom2. or save 50$ and buy a 9800gt of a 9600gt.

    • Carlton says:

hey, is that RAM compatible with your motherboard? find the QVL (Qualified Vendor List) for your motherboard at the motherboard maker’s website…make sure your ram is listed on the QVL. if not..the ram wont boot and you have wasted $92 (unless you RMA)

lol. i already built my pc but was finding instructions for a friend cant be bothered doing it for him – gotta study for exams. I saved up money from working for over 2 years (I’m only 16) and bought:
    intel i7 950
    asus rampage II extreme
    nvidia gtx 295
    coolermaster storm sniper case
6 fans including built in ones
    razer keyboard and mouse
22″ Asus monitor (i know its not big but parents wouldnt let me go bigger)
    6g of RAM
    1 x Velociraptor 300gb HDD (10000rpm is SO AWESOME)
    1 x Seagate 250gb (already had)
    1 x Seagate 500gb

it took me ages to get enough but it was SOOO worth it.

What do I need to do to build in an hdmi output so I can hook it up to my HDtv?

    • FusionX says:

Depending on your Video Card you can buy a quick adapter, If you have a DVI you just get the adapter like i have on mine. if you have the older kind I’m not sure they make an adapter but even if you get an adapter, to see Hi Def your video card has to support it. but none the less you can still view it on your HD TV

    • Angel says:

Hey, First of all I must warn you that you are wasting your money on such a built
you are trying to find a case maybe incompatible with your mobo and parts are old too (why are you using a floppy ?? this invention is obsolete ???) save your money and buy a mass storage device or (pendrive)
      ————
your monitor needs a good vga card i suggest 9600 Gt (it’s A PCI-e) so you need to change mobo too (HDD, CPU are fine) you need also a good power supply, if you are buying genuine windows DON’T get 7 beta and start saving for year 2011 to buy a retail version

if you built the pc written in your post , your gonna loose it after 1 year or you have to upgrade (come on it’s vista and 7 century)

      • Aristides says:

i thoug you were talking to me lol about the floppy i was like wtf i never say anyhing about making a pc just thoug about it… anyway thanks for info and man i think i wil lhave to play gta in some 2 or 3 years when i get the money myself to buy pc cuz my momma hates me :D

      • Jay Fish says:

er i need a floppy for my own reasons, and i hate windows vista, ive had it on one of my computers since the first beta! also i have already pre-ordered windows 7, and i have the rc of windows 7 on another of my computers. windows xp media center is like xp pro but better, im a xp fan more then any other os. so anyways about this build, im not going to build it cause i made far too many mistakes with it, so im gonna remake it.

    • Ricky says:

If you ever plan on upgrading your hardware, don’t get the OEM… impossible to upgrade.

heyyyyy good build i would probably go with ocz or corsair ram, ive heard of problems with patriot ram on the evga board. Also i have the same motherboard and the sound quality is very good for on board sound so i would probably drop the sound card or if you really want some good audio go with a creative card, one of the x-fi’s or something. personally i think creative makes THE best audio cards. but everything else is cool….. and if you build it look into overclocking. the i7 overclocks really well and the board makes it pretty easy.

I’m thinking of building my own PC for the first time. I’ve owned several Dells in the past and won’t ever buy another one. I use my PC for web browsing, Excel (with lots of macros), Word, and other general business use. I’ve spent some time at http://www.newegg.com looking at components, but at this point I’m kind of confused, and would greatly appreciate any suggestions. My only component bias right now is that I’d like to stay with Intel processors. I plan to purchase a new monitor as well, in the 23-24 inch widescreen LCD category. Thanks in advance.

    • Mike says:

      Hi Peetree,

Overall, the system looks like it could be put together but here are a few things to keep in mind:

      1) The Antec 1200 case is a bottom loading PSU tower. With that 1200w hulk of a psu you have (good choice btw) is designed with a top venting fan rather than the standard side fan. This could be a potential heat issue with your SLi 295s occupying space directly in the path of your furnace, um PSU.

      2) Make sure that you have the space to use the other expansion slots with the 295s in SLi. On several boards (Rampage II Extreme), the extra slots are taken up by two double wide video cards and completely covered with Tri Sli.

      3) Always make sure to check your vendor approved ram lists (although most ram works, you may as well be sure) and I would go with RAM with a higher clock speed. If your mother board supports fast ram, say 1600mhz, you should jump for it. Especially if you plan on overclocking later. This will give you a bit more head room so you don’t go past ram speed mfr. specs.

So look at those three points and see.

This is my first solo build, I’m pretty proficient with computers but I need to check some things! Just a few easy questions… hopefully! I’d be very grateful for your answers :-)

    1) With a blu-ray dvd drive and hd monitor will this video card, http://www.ebuyer.com/product/155218 be sufficient to play blu-ray dvds? Also does this card look half decent?

    2) Does a liquid cooling system negate the need for a dedicated processor fan? Or heatsink?

    Thanks!

My mom bought me this laptop for $2000 and it was a big waste. Now since I got instructions making a PC…. what to do with this laptop hmmmmm oh! delete everything and clean it off to make it look brand new and the get most of the money unless they rip you off like EB games does. Need some advice for parts and costs and I am not selling this laptop until I get a job just incase. Can’t wait till I get into PC gaming!

i have your proc, hard drive, mobo, case, and power supply in mine, just different RAM, vid card, DVD drive, no additional sound card, and am using Win XP. mine is running great though i had to tweak my OCZ 1333 MHz memory in BIOS to get it to work w/o crashing. i might consider upgrading to the GTX 285 if i were u. i am getting great gaming performance with it.

      • Fionn says:

Hmm Id Love to upgrade but i dont have the cash but i do have two GTX 260s In SLi
What Video Card Do you have?
        Thanks

    CPU – Intel Core i7 940 2.93GHz
GPU – GeForce GTX 285 or GeForce GTX 295
    Motherboard – Intel X58
    RAM – Corsair 4 or 6 GB 1333Mhz DDR3 CL7

    HDD – Seagate Barracuda 1.5TB
Case – Something like a Cooler Master Cosmos

Is your ram dual or triple channel? [says on motherboard]?
I suggest you get 2 or 4 ram [if dual channel] or 3 or 6 ram [if tripple channel] it speeds things up a lot.

Crucial Ballistix is great, fastest on the market I think…

    • Skitzin283 says:

Its tripple channel so im guessing 6GB RAM would be better then? Also would this setup run ok with an OC Intel i7 920? or would that be undercutting the other stuff?
