Just to expand on the firewall desciption a bit. It can be either a software firewall, like the native firewall in XP SP2, aftermarket software like Zone Alarm or a firewall can also be a hardware firewall. Most routers perform the function of a hardware firewall effectively preventing outside access to your network/pc's.
