Modular CPU and other devices
Hello folks,
As a continuation of the other post dealing with "fantasy hardware", I was wondering if folks would consider the following:
1. Modularized CPU subsystem.
This would be like it sounds. Starting from a "basic" CPU/FPU and adding users wants and needs such as MMX/SSE/3D-NOW and L2 cache. As your quest for more power and speed increase, so can your CPU subsystem with modular add-ons.
2. Modularized video subsystems.
This is not new in the industry but one which shows great merit.
This modularzation would permit the adding of 2D/3D and texturing capabilities.
3. Multi-plane video.
Why oh why must video for the PC only work on one place with one GPU?
Proven in the workstation world that to get the fastest speeds one must have multiple planes of video.
Case in point:
A video card with say 3 planes. One for "X" one for "Y" and one for "D".
Each of these GPUs, working together, on a PCI or PCI/64 bus would at least double the speeds of the fastest chipsets.
Now, in the Pee-Cee world, one must buy EITHER 2D or 3D because one cannot have both with reasonable performance.
Busses amd the like.
AGP and PCI are showing thier age and have become a bottle neck.
Its time for something wild.
Why not PCI/64 or a "GIO" bus where all devices on the bus are GURANTEED a given I/O rate?
Of course all this requires some real fancy footwork for a O/S. And you folks KNOW how I feel about one of them.
