Thats really strange. I always try the easyest things first, pull the battery out and fire it back in, check to make sure my USB port my reciever is on is working, and do what you said, remove and reinstall your mouse software.

As for your XP not working on your newer system it's probably because you ususally need the same chipset on your board for the swap to work without a fresh install.

I'm sure the mix of an AMD cpu vs your newer intel would throw a fair amount of problems in also. Check your CMOS to make sure USB is enabled on your new board, go to your supplier of your mouse for a support page, maybe an updated driver or FAQ.
