We used to have two brother cats who did similar things. One was abused (kicked) by a neighbor one time, and after that he was never the same (always hiding), and it seemed that the more sociable one would look out for the other one, as if he was fighting with him to teach him how to protect himself. After they died (16 years each), we got a new cat (Cooper - 3 years) and he fights me out of nowhere. I can be walking past him, and the next thing I know I have half inch teeth stuck into my leg. It hurts, but it is also fun sometimes when we chase each other... minutes later he will be sitting next to me purring. Cats are unique... I remember a comment from Grissom on CSI (LV) who said Cats have only been domesticated for 7 or 8 thousand years and their natural instincts are still there.
