It's not a good idea to user your server as a router/firewall, since it will be the computer that the rest of the world sees, and if it is broken into everything on the server will be exposed. That's a big security risk.

Second, unless you are salvaging an obsolete PC and sticking Linux on it, there is no way that it will be cheaper than a $40 router from some electronics store.
