can I just take that as a good general rule that there generally won't be any problems between mobo and memory sticks if the speeds match up?

Nope.
You also have to consider the architecture of the RAM modules, number, size, brand and density, of the chips, single sided vs double sided are a few of the things that will cause a specific module to not work with a specific motherboard.
For example:
Quote:
Due to CPU limitation, DIMM modules with 128 Mb memory chips or
double-sided x16 memory chips are not supported in this motherboard.

From page 2-12 of the motherboard manual.
