It's called being a home owner - it's happened to me more times than I care to remember. But...as a home owner part of the 'deal' is that I maintain city land (in my city, the sidewalk in front of my home, the small plot of grass between the sidewalk and the street as well as the curb). If the city says repair it - I do. Fact of life. Just last month I had to pay 50% of a sidewalk repair that I had nothing to do with...but my property rights say I have to make the repair using a city authorized contractor and that I have to pay 50% of the cost.
