I should have mentioned that these graphic file types have never been assoicated with IE. They have always been assoicated with Paint Shop Pro (open) and Photoshop (edit). When I installed IE, I did a custom install and asked it not to associate graphic file types. I really don't want to associate these with IE which is what I think you're suggesting I do.

Nor does this explain to me why this happens only with local files.

Any other suggestions?
