All IDE cables have 40 pin connectors...it's the number of wires in the ribbon that's different. 40 wire IDE cables use the master/slave jumper settings. 80 wire IDE cables use the CS (cable select) jumper setting. Are you sure the optical is showing up as Primary Slave? Well, if it's working no need to mess with it I guess.
