120mm fans can move more air while spinning at a lower RPM to help keep noise levels down. Some cases also accept 92mm fans...a nice compromise between 80mm and 120mm fans.
80mm is the standard case fan size but more cases are now coming out with 92mm and 120mm fan ports.
