Try this: say you have a folder named family.dbx. Create a new folder in OE with something like familyTest.dbx (the dbx won't show when you are creating it in OE). Copy at least one email to that new folder. Exit OE. Delete familyTest.dbx. Rename your "real" folder to familyTest.dbx (making a backup first, of course). Try OE again and see if the correct emails show up. If it works, then you can rename it while in OE.
