No sound on new Liteon dvd burner

I was able to easily install my new Liteon dvd burner, install the software, and generally get it up and running.

Here's my drive:

http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16827106045

However, to my dismay, I can get no sound when I play dvd media, whether its a commerially pruchased movie or a self produced dvd.

When I put in the retail purchaed version of "The Patriot" it tells me that I have to start my dvd playback program

When I put in the retail purchased version of "Titanic" I can choose to play it with Windows Media player, but with no sound.

It will play audio cds just fine. The audio cable is firmly connected from the header on the SB Live card to the dvd drive.

My computer is a P4 2.53 GHz
MSI Neo2 MS-6728 motherboard
512Mb ram
Nvidia GeForce FX5500 with 512Mb video ram (I think)
Win xp SP2

When I contacted Liteon technical support, they said I probably needed the audio codec for the drive. They used to reccommend AC3, which used to be free, but don't reccommend it now because it's not free. It's kind of disheartening to find that you can't play a dvd with sound right out of the box.

Liteon suggested going to download.com to find something. Does anyone have a suggestion as to what codec to look for? Also, from the symptons I described, is it likely that the lack of the codec is the problem.

Your hellp is greatly appreciated.
