I found the cause of the problem for No ping/ No browse was due to Zone
Alarm. As soon as it was turned off, the pc saw the network immediately
and the problems disappeared.
In case any of you run into this,
www.helmig.com shows how to configure
Zone Alarm so it will not interfer with the LAN.
