If you're connecting directly to the modem, it won't take a new computer hooked up to it since it's registered to the first one. If you're lucky (and most cable companies work like this these days) you just need to completely power cycle the modem to be able to connect a different computer to it. If you're unlucky, you'll have to call the cable company and register the second computer. If you're going to be using both computers simultaneously or constantly switching back and forth, buy a router and you can plug in as many computers as you want.
