The Athlon X2 6400+ performs better in gaming (other than RTS) than the phenom, is a bit cheaper, and will work on your motherboard whereas phenom upgrades don't go all that well for most AM2 motherboard (new bios may fix that). Either way, you'll need to update the BIOS if you intend to upgrade your processor.
