You don't need to relegate it to the closet.

There are also fan controllers that you can use to slow down a fan...they are basically a fancy potentiometer....the downside is you risk burning up your CPU. Another alternative is to buy a larger heatsink for your CPU which turns at lower RPM's and is more efficient...therefore being quieter.
