Reinstal Problems
I reinstalled XP as after 5 years it had finally become unstable.
Machine consists of an Asus A7N8X-E Delux MB with a 3200 Barton CPU and 1.5 Gb of memory. Two 160 gb HD both partitioned.
Install sequence was XP Pro (basic) the SP2 and then SP3, after that the various utilities games etc.
The problems are:
(a) The USB ports are all installed as USB 1.1 (all 6 ports should be USB 2) XP SP2 is supposed to install the USB 2 drivers automatically, but seems not to have done so, trying to install them manually has proved fruitless so far, I am not at all sure how to correct this.
(b) the AMD3200 CPU has an FSB speed of 400 and a frequency of 200,
The MB has a jumper setting for the FSB speed, default is 400, or it can be set slower.
I never even noticed this the first time I installed it (several years ago) and oddly enough it was on the slower setting. Thinking to improve matters I set it to the higher (and apparently correct) setting, but combined with a 200mhz setting on the chip in the bios leads to instability and BSODs
setting the jumper to a lower fsb speed and the chip at 200 is still not stable, having a fast FSB and the chip at 166 is stable, but I am losing performance.
Graphics card is a Radeon 1650 pro with 512 MB video ram.
I am aware that this is a comparitively old system, but I cannot afford to upgrade it, I need to get it working better. I am hoping that I do not have to go through the entire reinstal again. Any suggestions?
